Introduction |
|
In november 2004 I paid a visit to Myanmar. I visited the temples in the capital city of Yangon at the spot of an old village called Dagon. Additionally I visited the sanctuaries in Bago which was a centre of Mon civilisation in the early centuries of our christian era. In the eleventh century the Bamar forced the Mon to the south and founded a new empire with its centre in Bagan. Here many temples from this period still remain as silent witnesses of its former glory. I also visited the virginal inland country in the eastern Shan state. There I wandered through the villages of ethnic minorities such as the Danu, the Palaung and the Pao. Finally I visited the old temple ruins of the former Pyu kingdom near Pyay.
Pao woman near Kalaw On my way I made many pictures and video recordings of monuments that are many centuries old. I also photographed more recent monuments from the time of the Konbaung dynasty such as the cave temples in Monywa and the Shwesandaw monastery in Mandalay.
